China Industry: Audi Will Bring Its Diesel Technology to the China Market

Audi AG of Germany is beginning the government-approval process to bring its diesel technologies to the China market some time around 2010. The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) had until recently placed prohibitive restrictions on the domestic automobile industry such that hydrogen power and fuel cell petrol-electric hybrid technologies were favoured environmentally-friendly fuel options. But a relaxation of restrictions and NDRC promises that diesel fuel quality standards would be raised significantly before 2010 have led Audi to explore the introduction of its diesel engine technology, which reduces carbon-dioxide emissions 30% over standard petrol-powered vehicles. Production of the new diesel-powered sedans is likely to be accommodated by a capacity increase in Audi’s Changchun-based facilities.
